“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”

Over time, some objects depreciate in value while others appreciate. For instance, when we recall a mistake, it usually seems like a bigger deal closer to the moment it happened. However, over time, it fades into perspective. What we thought was an earth-shattering error may not carry as much value as it did initially. Meanwhile, some memories appreciate in value. For instance, a memory of the last time a particular group of friends or family members were all assembled in the same place may not have seemed like a big deal in the moment. However, that moment in time might become a precious memory later on.

This quote, by Dr. Seuss, is about those types of memories which appreciate in value as time goes by. Moreover, it’s about the moment before they even become a memory. When those moments arise, consider the fact that you don’t always know whether their value will eventually appreciate or depreciate. Since you may not know, this quote serves as a reminder to not only be more mindful of every moment but to especially cherish those precious moments that gain value. Because if you weren’t paying attention to them, you might one day wish you had.
