Thought of the Day

“There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, all things in succession. That which grows fast, withers as rapidly. That which grows slowly, endures.”

The road to what we want in life is not always quick and easy, especially for the things that endure. This quote, by Josiah Gilbert Holland, explains that there is no royal road–no silver bullet. It’s a process.

It’s tempting to want to take shortcuts or imagine that the things we want will take shape overnight or with little effort. But this kind of thinking makes it even more discouraging when we’re faced with difficulties and setbacks.

When we expect the “royal road,” we’re even more unprepared and unwilling to travel the difficult road(s) before us. And in the end, we take even longer to reach the places we want to go.
