Thought of the Day

“It isn’t where you came from. It’s where you’re going that counts.”

One of the things in life that you have no control over is where you’re born. You often have no say over where you grow up either. You also have no control over unforeseen circumstances and events. Whether it’s a physical location or a non-physical circumstance, these things make up “where you came from.” They are the factors that brought you to your present. And they are factors that may influence your future.

This quote, by Ella Fitzgerald, serves as a great reminder that it’s not where you came from but where you’re heading that counts. Sometimes we create limits for ourselves based on the physical and circumstantial factors that represent where we came from. However, these self-imposed limits only add an additional challenge to the challenges that may already be there. Moreover, to limit where you’re going based on the things that make up where you came from, most of which were beyond your control, is to be insensitive and unfair to yourself.
