It’s that time of year again. The “New Year’s Resolution” season is upon us. Whether you have some yourself or not, you’re likely to get at least an earful of what other people hope to change or improve upon during the upcoming year. In effect, it’s hard to go through the end of December and January without hearing or reading the words “New Year’s resolution.”

As a collective, we’ve determined that the New Year is the ideal time to set goals and dedicate ourselves to personal development. Unfortunately, and backed by data, most of our New Year pursuits don’t last very long, and we often find ourselves making the same goals the following year.

Why does this tend to be a pattern?

Perhaps the problem is that we’re forgetting to include another resolution that’s above all others. The one that determines the rest.

Rather than “new year, new fitness and/or health”, “new year, new financial situation”, or “new year, new skills and hobbies”, how about “new year, new attitude“?

Here are five things to add to your life equation to have a more “positive” year and put a checkmark on your new year, new attitude resolution.

  1. Practice mindfulness every day. Read more here.
  2. Have gratitude in all things. Read more here, here, and here.
  3. Have a growth mindset. This will affect how you perceive failure and how you persevere through challenges. Read more here.
  4. Let go of the things you cannot change. Read more here and here.
  5. Do the best you can. Read more here.
