The Struggle is Real–Why We Need Empathy and Perspective

What are your struggles?

Just like you’re probably able to come up with a few responses to that question, so can everyone else.

Why is knowing this important?

Ability to Empathize

Not recognizing that everyone has struggles of their own makes it easy to minimize or overlook what they might be going through. It also makes it easy to assume things are going much better than they actually are. However, the grass is not always greener on the other side. Unless you’re also walking in their shoes, you may not fully understand or be able to judge how impacting their struggles are.

Just because theirs may not be the same as yours doesn’t make theirs any less important. Forgetting this limits the ability to empathize as well as the ability to provide emotional support to someone when they need it most.

Ability to Put Things in Perspective

Not remembering that everyone has struggles of their own makes it harder to put things into perspective. When was the last time you made a deliberate effort to imagine yourself in someone else’s shoes?

Ability to Combat the Feeling of Being Alone

At the end of the day, we all want the assurance that someone is there for us and genuinely cares. By recognizing other’s struggles you’re better able to empathize and put things into perspective. But even further, there’s the feeling of being alone. In recognizing others struggles, you’re able to realize you’re not alone in having difficulties and challenges in life. Furthermore, you’re able to help others not feel so alone by being there for them fully and wholeheartedly.
